This is one aspect of planning a party that can be lots of fun! (please note I do say it can be fun)
Especially when you get the kids involved and try to create food to fit the theme of the party. I had lots of fun with my children coming up with ideas for my son's 3rd birthday party based on his favourite book "The Gruffalo".
The actual focus of the whole party became food, glorious food. We read The Gruffalo book together again and made a list of all the food featured in
the story, and picked out some buzz words we could have fun with:
Gruffalo Crumble : Scrambled Snake : Roasted
Fox : Owl Ice Cream : Poisonous Warts : Knobbly Knees : Log Piles : Purple
Prickles : and the nut was good!
Then we went about brainstorming what foods we
could use for each of the above and how we can improvise. As we had a morning breakfast party
followed by swimming, the food we served had to all be breakfast/brunch easy to
eat items. Stuff everyone can nibble on before or after swimming. Which I think made it a
little easier as breakfast food is generally easier to prepare and this
is what we came up with:
Scrambled Snake - donuts, halved and cut up to make a snake shape topped with
egg and mayonnaise which was supposed to look like scrambled something. Topped with halved cherry tomatoes and chives.
Log Piles - Pancakes filled with Nutella, rolled up
and cut the shape and size of small log piles. These went down really well. Gruffalo Crumble - Breakfast
muesli mixed with yoghurt and berries
Roasted Fox - mini grilled sausages in small wholemeal bread rolls
Knobbly Knees - large arabic dates .. and the Nut was good - a bowl
of whole nuts
Poisonous warts - Large wasabi peas (great for display but
suggest to keep out of reach of children as they do punch a punch) Chocolate and Orange cupcakes - Just because they are my son's favourite cupcakes
Purple Prickle Juice - We originally went with Purple Prickle
Jelly but then I realised we had way too much food and instead I did Purple
Prickle Juice (Ribena and water :)
We also made some mushrooms, from Hard boiled eggs. Slice the top and the
bottom so the egg stands on a plate, top with halved tomatoes. Put a few small
dollops of mayonnaise and decorate with some chive. They were almost too good to eat and maybe guests didn't realize they were
edible? as this was one of the only things remaining at the end of the party.
Owl Ice cream - Vanilla ice
cream with huge eyes. The eyes were sliced large orange and chocolate aero
balls, one of my favourite chocolate. We served this at the end of the party as a going home
treat. It was a particularly hot morning and this was for sure a welcome treat. Didn't get a picture of this but the ice cream was served in cones.
We had some bread baskets scattered around filled with mini croissants
both plain and chocolate, danish pastries and breakfast muffins. For drinks we stuck with Fresh Juices for all, tea/coffee for the parents and
enough purple prickle juice to go around.
The food was loved and enjoyed by all the children and the adults :)
and my son still thinks everyone should have a Gruffalo party! but really
there's no such thing as a Gruffalo.. or is there?!
